Why ARE “Sustainable” GARMENTS More Expensive?
ONE REASON SUSTAINABLE FASHION COSTS MORE IS THE MATERIALS. AT NIRIE, WE WORK WITH FABRICS THAT ALREADY HAVE A STORY—VINTAGE LACE, COUTURE SURPLUS, DEADSTOCK LINENS, AND DELICATE TRIMS. THESE ARE NOT OFF-THE-SHELF MATERIALS; THEY’RE RARE FINDS, OFTEN SOURCED FROM LOCAL MARKETS IN DAKAR.
MUSIC SOUNDS BETTER WITH YOU
The contributions of these Black artists have given me hope and a sense of belonging. Their innovations and resilience have shown me that I, too, can make a meaningful impact in the creative landscape. Their legacies remind me that Black people are not just participants in the narrative; we are co-creators of it. This realisation fuels my desire to contribute something unique and powerful.
Why We Pre-Wash and Hand-Finish Every Nirie Piece
AT NIRIE, EVERY GARMENT BEGINS ITS JOURNEY WITH CARE, STARTING WITH A METICULOUS PRE-WASH PROCESS. THIS IS MORE THAN JUST PREPARATION—IT’S PART OF OUR COMMITMENT TO MAKING EACH PIECE TIMELESS, PRACTICAL, AND BEAUTIFUL.
WORDS BY MY MOTHER
NOW, FASHION IS BECOMING MORE CULTURAL AND TRADITIONAL, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT PEOPLE ARE SEEKING. THEY WANT SOMETHING NEW. THAT’S WHY WE’RE GOING BACK TO THE ROOTS OF WHERE IT ALL STARTED.
RECLAIMING MY CREATIVE IDENTITY
LIFE HAS A CURIOUS WAY OF GUIDING US BACK TO OUR TRUE SELVES, OFTEN IN THE MOST UNEXPECTED WAYS. A FEW YEARS AGO, I FOUND MYSELF AT A CROSSROADS, HAVING LOST MY WAY AMIDST THE NOISE OF FASHION'S EVER-EVOLVING LANDSCAPE. MY INITIAL BRAND, ONCE A CANVAS FOR MY CREATIVE VISION, HAD BECOME A MIRROR REFLECTING OTHERS' IDEAS RATHER THAN MY OWN. IT WAS A CHALLENGING PERIOD, BUT IT ALSO SPARKED A LONG JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY AND RENEWAL THAT LED TO THE CREATION OF NIRIE.
THE WHITE BOUBOU
FOR GENERATIONS, THE BOUBOU HAS BEEN WOVEN INTO THE FABRIC OF OUR LIVES. PASSED DOWN FROM PARENTS TO CHILDREN, IT'S NOT JUST WORN DURING CELEBRATIONS BUT EMBRACED IN EVERYDAY MOMENTS. ITS FLOWING SILHOUETTE OFFERS BOTH COMFORT IN OUR TROPICAL CLIMATE AND A CANVAS FOR THE ARTISTRY OF OUR LOCAL TAILORS. EACH BOUBOU TELLS A STORY THROUGH ITS EMBROIDERY, REFLECTING OUR RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE AND THE CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT DEFINES US.
DROP 001, LES VENDEUSES DE SOLEIL
In the heart of Dakar, where the vibrant streets hum with life, a young girl named Sili begins her day. The air is thick with the scent of spices and the calls of street vendors, painting a scene of lively chaos. This is where our journey starts, inspired by the resilience and grace of Sili, the protagonist of a cherished film.
Her story, much like the stories woven into each of our garments, is one of strength, beauty, and unwavering spirit.
