RECLAIMING MY CREATIVE IDENTITY

Dear Nirie Tribe,

Life has a curious way of guiding us back to our true selves, often in the most unexpected ways. A few years ago, I found myself at a crossroads, having lost my way amidst the noise of fashion's ever-evolving landscape. My initial brand, once a canvas for my creative vision, had become a mirror reflecting others' ideas rather than my own. It was a challenging period, but it also sparked a long journey of self-discovery and renewal that led to the creation of NIRIE.

REDISCOVERING MYSELF

Being “detached” allowed me the space to explore my thoughts and passions without distraction. This period of solitude was not lonely but rather a time of reconnection with the things that truly mattered to me. One of the most significant reconnections was with my mother, Marie. Our bond deepened as we shared stories, dreams, and aspirations, rekindling a relationship that became the foundation of NIRIE.

INSPIRATIONS FROM ICONS AND IMAGINATIONS

As I delved deeper into my roots and personal history, I drew inspiration from a rich tapestry of influences that resonated with me. The work of Malick Sidibé and Djibril Diop Mambety captured the essence of African life and culture with a poignancy that deeply moved me. Their art, brimming with narratives of resilience and beauty, reminded me of the power of storytelling through visual expression.

Cultural icons like Rihanna and Marie Antoinette, with their unapologetic embrace of individuality, have long fueled my creativity. Alongside them, the timeless vision of David Bowie has inspired me to explore new creative realms. Gordon Parks' profound storytelling through photography and Amy Sall’s insightful exploration of African identity have also shaped my artistic journey. Each of these figures embodies a unique blend of originality and grace that ignites my imagination. The romantic allure of 2005’s Pride and Prejudice transports me to a world of gentle charm. My fascination with 18th-century paintings, finds a modern echo in the captivating world of Bridgerton. This series offers an aspirational visual escape.

This eclectic mix influences have shaped my vision for the present, reminding me of the joy that comes from self-expression and creating my own world.

CREATING A CURATED PARADISE

In a world often overshadowed by stress and turmoil, I longed to create a space where black women could find solace and joy—a curated paradise free from fear and judgment. NIRIE became my vehicle to promote happy narratives for black women, to offer an escape into a softer, more romantic vision of life. The concept of "soft life" and the enchantment of the countryside were interwoven into our designs, celebrating both the serenity of nature and the vibrant spirit of African heritage.

I feel the weight of current events casting a shadow over my daily life, yet I stay firmly anchored in the present. In this context, I find a sense of escapism and inspiration in the distorted 'romanticism' of past eras.

A CELEBRATION OF BLACKNESS

At the heart of NIRIE lies a profound love for being black. Our designs are a celebration of black beauty, strength, and creativity. We aim to honor our heritage while embracing the present and looking towards the future. Each garment is a testament to the rich cultural tapestry that defines us, inspired by the stories and traditions passed down through generations.

THE JOURNEY AHEAD

Starting this brand with my mother has been a journey of healing, discovery, and joy. NIRIE is more than a fashion label; it's a tribute to the women who have inspired us, the stories that have shaped us, and the beauty that surrounds us. It's an invitation to all who seek a sanctuary of elegance and authenticity in a world that often feels chaotic.

As we embark on this new chapter, we invite you to join us in celebrating the magic of NIRIE. Follow us on Instagram, subscribe to our newsletter, and be part of a community that values heritage, creativity, and the endless possibilities of a dream realised.

Jërëjëf,

Nina
